Project Plan: Script on Grief & Loss

Image
In this essay, I will talk about my project plan and my initial sketch. I will complete the tasks each week and explain them in more detail in future posts here. Here is my project plan:  My project plan Later on, I will create an initial sketch of the script and draw the storyboard, which follows the characters and the story arcs I imagined. I will be either using Celtx, Kit Scenarist, or any other software for this script. I created this infographic on my project plan using Canva or canva.com,  which is free.

Project Sign Off: Script on Grief & Loss

Image
In this post, I want to talk more about the completion of my project sign-off for my negotiated project, which is a script based on the theme of grief and loss. I did the project sign-off on Monday, the 24th of November. You can find my project sign-off in the link down below or here:  charlie's project sign-off I also have done research on three writers who have made films with strong themes of grief and loss. Through analysing these three writers and their specific works, I hope to understand more about how to write and how to approach the subject. The three writers are: Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Hirokazu Kore-eda, and Edward Yang. Below are films of the their works which I discussed in my research: Drive My Car (2021) - Ryusuke Hamaguchi Source:  themoviedb Maborosi (1995) - Hirokazu Kore-eda Source:  themoviedb Still Walking (2008) - Hirokazu Kore-eda Source:  themoviedb Yi Yi (2000) - Edward Yang Source:  themoviedb You can look at my project sign-off here: charlie's project sign

Initial Research: Three Writers

Image
Since my project is going to be a 10-15 page long script with the theme grief and loss, I will be researching writers that have created films involving grief and loss, looking at their screenplays and method of writing. I will also gain knowledge on their portrayals of grief and loss, which might be useful for my own perspective of the topic. Ryusuke Hamaguchi Source:  Depositphotos Ryusuke Hamaguchi is a Japanese director and screenwriter. He was born in 1978 in Kanagawa, Japan. He graduated from the University of Tokyo and worked in the commercial film industry for a few years before entering the graduate program in film at the Tokyo University of Arts. Some of his works include Happy Hour (2015), Asako I & II (2018), and Drive My Car (2021), which won the Academy Awards for International Feature.  Hamaguchi is well-known for his style of making films that deal with fiction that may manifest and play out in everyday life. The characters in his films are conveyed as people who are

Major Project : SMART objectives

Image
In this post, I will talk about my project in further detail, especially using SMART objectives. Source: istockphoto I've decided to create a script with the theme of grief and loss. I chose to do so because this is a heavy subject and a topic that I have been very interested in recently. It’s also a theme that is tragic, emotional, and natural, which might is challenging for me while having the potential to pull people in. I will be using open-source screenwriting software, which might be Kit Scenarist, Studiobinder, or Celtx. I will research the theme of grief and loss first, in terms of psychology, philosophy, and in the world of filmography and screenwriting. I will research screenwriters and screenplays that are related to grief and loss such as Hirokazu Koreeda, Edward Yang, and Ryusuke Hamaguchi. Afterward, I will create a 10-15 page script about the theme of grief and loss. I believe that it is really achievable for me to be able to accomplish this objective realistically,

Major Project : Initial Ideas

Image
My Milanote I have created this Milanote board with my ideas and initial research - please take a look at it. My main idea or theme is grief and loss. It has been a subject I'm interested in after the recent films I watched. Fortunately, I have not experienced extreme grief or loss, but another reason why I'm exploring this is that not only is it a sensitive and hard subject to talk about as a story, which is challenging, but I also have thought about how I would face grief when it comes to my loved ones. I feel exploring this subject, is also a matter of preparing myself for this. That said, I have already thought about different types of things I can do to explore grief and loss. As an aspiring filmmaker, the first option is to make a film, which is unlikely because of work and deadlines. The second option is to make a film review, which is very likely if I can find footage from the movies I want to talk about. The last option is to make a script, 10 - 15 pages, which is also

Sequential Photography

Image
To catch up with Ms. Milandeep's class, I'm doing simple and easy sequential photography. I worked with Daniyal on this for just a quick example. I began by using images using these settings with my iPhone, with ISO 160, a focal length of 26mm, and an aperture of f1.5. It's a sequence about a man dropping down his cap before it was revealed that he was frustrated. Afterward, I moved my photos into the computer. Then, on photoshops, I clicked on a new file, made a document-sized A4, chose to automate in files, and made a sequential image. After that, I downloaded the file as a png.  Inspiration from these photographs came from Daniyal, with which both of us shared ideas. I decided to photograph him with his cap, while he was photographing mine eating chocolate. It was quite rushed, and I had expected the sequence of photography to be more meaningful in terms of narrative, but it has done its main goal, which is to show movement through a sequence of photographs while lacking

Eadweard Muybridge Source :  Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division Eadweard Muybridge was an English photographer that is known for his pioneering work in photography and motion picture. Muybridge invented a new way to create motion using photographs with "The Horse in Motion." This was achieved by setting out multiple cameras to capture the different positions in a stride. This became a very important innovation that allows people to visualize how motion can be achieved through photography. Muybridge was also known for his work on  the Zoopraxiscope, a disk that also portrays motion.  Source : The Metropolitan Museum of Art Here is J.J. Ahern, a senior archivist at the Archives and Records Center at the University of Pennsylvania on Muybridge's work. “All the other photography before this had been straightforward poses, or a landscape, so being able to see someone doing physical activities allowed people to see how the body was working.” Gregory Vershbow, a

Blog Buddies : Advertisement Project Feedback

Image
Today my blog buddy will be Magda. You can check out her blog at firstdreamcamera.blogspot.com. I will be talking about her camera advertisement in this post. Source: Myfirstdreamcamera Firstly, her initial ideas and development is quite clear. She analyzed both adverts in a very concise way, detailing about the camera details that are trying to be emphasized, how photography is at the time of the advert, and what a good advertisement should be. I do believe that she can explain what she liked about both adverts better. That being said, her research does have a strong likeness to her own advert, including the subject, which is a camera, how she emphasizes the camera's strong points, and is fitting to her statement on what a good advertisement should be. Moving on the contact sheets and creation process, she did a great job on explaining her process from her thoughts and inspirations on her sketches, the creation of her logo in Pixlr, to her process of creating the contact sheets. I

Final Advert & Reflection

Image
This is my final advert. At first, I was unsure about various things, such as the subject of the photo and the text. I had to make changes to the sketch, such as changing the subject to a leopard, changing the camera picture into a high-angle one, and changing the sony lens into another lens. I also struggled to find copyright-free images that I want, and in the end, I decided to settle with stock images from gettyimages, istock, adobestock, and agefotostock. Along with that, I also had to change a sony logo into making my own. Despite that, the process of making the advert is very fun. I enjoyed designing the layout of the text and images, as well as trying to find the colors that I wanted. Having to adapt and compromise to things that are different from the sketch is something that I also learned during the process. In the end, I am very pleased with my final advert.

Final Advert Creation

Image
Having completed the sketch, I begin my work on Pixlr. The first step is to make a new document-sized A4 with no background color. Then, I decided to first make the bottom part of the advert. I begin by searching for the picture of the camera, which I found on adobestock. After that, I made a logo, B7s, using the shape circle and a star in the background while coloring them brown, a subtle contrast to black. Then, I made a slogan for the product, which is "Faster shutter, closer than ever", meaning that it has a fast shutter and great image quality. Moving on, I changed my idea of first using a picture of a man running. I changed it into a leopard because I feel that they are faster, and their skin is a really good detail to look into. I then made a background for the advert using leopard skin from istock. I then lowered the opacity of the skin and experimented with different background colors before deciding on grey. Afterward, I made a text on the top-left corner, emphasizi

Initial Sketch: Final Advert

Image
I started off the process with a rough sketch of the advert. It details my vision of where the text and the images will be, as well as the concepts I'm trying to emphasize on the camera. I decided beforehand that I wanted to create an advert relating to my subject, which is a film, and thus I chose a camera. The camera that I will be using in the Advert is a Sony A7R IV, its newest model. The reason being is that it's new and has its own appeal, such as its great photo-video capabilities, fast shutter, and autofocus, with high image/video quality. My sketch involves a very fast-moving subject and the idea is that the camera's fast shutter is able to capture a very high-quality image, even when you zoom in. Having finished the sketch, which gave me a clear idea of what I want in the advert and the main points I should emphasize on, my next post will be about the final advert creation.

Creating an Advertisement : Ideas and Initial Research

Source: Ads of the World The picture above is an advertisement for Fujifilm's Finepix F70 camera. The setting of the advert is during a funeral, and the reason why is because of the camera's main selling feature in the ad, which is its fast autofocus and mouth tracking. An important part of photography is to capture the moment, and in order to do that, every second counts. Thus, it would be terrible or inconvenient if the photo is blurry or out of focus, especially at such an important moment. Fujifilm also put emphasis on people's mouths on the F70 with the green box, which is autofocus, and the caption "with smile capture", meaning that its autofocus system does a great job of detecting expressions through a person's mouth. Other than that, the ad also shows the camera's color capabilities with black, yellow, green, and the skin tone color present in the picture. Welcome to my blog

Hello welcome to my blog. My name is Charlie, I am a student from De Montfort International College. My course is film studies and I'll mostly talk about films in this blog. In my first post, I would like to discuss one of my favorite films. Source: Yi Yi Movie Database This image is from a film named Yi Yi, released in 2000. It was directed by Edward Yang, a Taiwanese auteur known for his realistic portrayal of Taiwanese society. It explores the lives of three generations of a Taiwanese family in Taipei. Yang Yang is the youngest child, Ting Ting is the teenage daughter, and NJ is the middle-aged father. Other main characters include the mother Min-Min, her brother A-Di, and their mother (the grandmother). Yi Yi is special to me in every aspect of its filmmaking, especially its characters and story. This film fits into my perception of the film I want to make, which is natural, compelling, and observes humanity and society. I also realized how hard it is to make a film like this w
