Creative Writing: Target Market Research

ln this post, I will talk about doing research on my target market. This is so that I can better understand how to write my book through what the readers expect as well as improve the quality of the writing and book itself.

To begin with, I will be researching more about the non-fiction audience since my book will lean more on that direction as a sort of third-person diary on someone's life, even though some of the details including characters are different from reality.

With the short story being about adolescence, I feel that the book will most likely appeal to teens aged 14-17 and young adults. This is based on a survey by Amy Watson in Italy, 2016 with over 6000 respondents about which book genre do they prefer.

As seen above, it shows that most teenagers answered "teen stories" at 22%, followed by three other major genres such as adventure stories, love stories, and fantasy/magic. This means that since my book is also about adolescence, it may mean that most teenagers aged 14 over will show interest in it.

Along with that, I can also include elements of other genre to my book which may fit. An idea is to include romance or even adventure, which I feel can make the book more appealing and gain more interest  overall.

Moving on, in regards to where I can publish my book and where most audiences can read or discover it. As stated in an article by Elite Authors (2020), the best places to market a book is through:
  • Word of mouth, personal referrals
  • Sharing to book clubs
  • Use a literary agent
  • Put and shared online
In terms of online marketing, the article stated that there are many benefits that online marketing can bring for a nonfiction book, such as:
  • Providing a brief snapshot of the book
  • More accessible for potential readers to find the book
  • Available for the whole world to see
  • Larger exposure by how people share information
That said, in order to accomplish online marketing, I will have to create an interesting book cover and use interesting imagery that can catch their eyes. I will also upload the book in my website as well as share it through some of my social media accounts.

In conclusion, I have better understood my own target audience, which I've decided to be teens aged 14 over and young adults. The next step for me is to try including an element of romance and adventure to the story to make the story more interesting, as well as gaining a more broader audience. I will also keep in mind that online marketing, by uploading the book to my website and sharing it to social media.
